MPC Training Programs in Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy
The Michigan Psychoanalytic Council (MPC) offers advanced training in psychoanalytic theory and technique for an interdisciplinary group of mental health professionals. The courses expose students to a combination of classical and contemporary orientations. Students may expect to study the original writings of Freud as well as a variety of current views and controversies within psychoanalysis. The courses offered reflect the current heterogeneity of theory and practice in psychoanalysis. They include recent theories regarding psychological development, the effects of trauma and the role of affect, as well as contemporary models of the psychology of men and women. MPC disavows any orthodoxy and welcomes all significant viewpoints in psychoanalysis.
The programs in adult psychoanalysis and child psychoanalysis are based on the tripartite model of psychoanalytic education and features experiences of 1) a personal analysis, 2) supervision on treatment cases, and 3) coursework in theory and technique. The training programs in psychoanalysis and child psychoanalysis are independent but integrated allowing candidates to choose either or both training programs. Those interested may take courses leading toward certification in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. Courses are offered in Ann Arbor, East Lansing and elsewhere.

In contemporary psychoanalytic theory, the focus of analytic inquiry has shifted from a one-person intrapsychic conflict model to a two-person model in which conflict, desire and personal growth are understood to develop in the context of relationships and the social world. Influenced by postmodern critiques of the bounded self, as well as feminist theory, complex systems theory, and attachment theory, the “relational turn” in psychoanalysis has led to innovative clinical approaches and new theoretical perspectives including the Relational, Interpersonal, Intersubjective, and Self Psychological schools of thought. This Psychotherapy Program is designed to give experienced clinicians the opportunity to learn to think and practice from these relational perspectives. [P] 54 CE credits

This course will review the literature on gender and sexuality, with particular focus on sexual orientation. Revisions in theory and clinical approaches will be explored. Topics will include, but not be limited to, issues of transference and countertransference, coming out, developmental issues and gender non-conformity. Clinical material will be welcomed.
