This clinical paper, written largely from an object relations vantage, explores the place of “bad” internalized objects in the narcissistic distress and narcissistic defenses of two analytic patients.  Rage plays an important part in the lives of these patients, and our work with their rage influences the fate of these internalized objects.  The author proposes that a move toward health in these patients involved a transformation of the internal "bad" object into an "aesthetic" one.
Peter Wood is a psychoanalyst in private practice in East Lansing, Michigan.  He has served in several capacities on the Board of the Michigan Psychoanalytic Council, most notably  as Vice President for Training from 2008- 2015.  He has previously published a paper, “Skin of Hate, Skin of Love” in the journal Psychoanalytic Social Work.

 1) Define and use appropriately the concepts of ego ideal, self relations, and bad object.
 2) Understand how an object relations vantage can illuminate the process of working with
     narcissistic defenses and disorders.

 3) Address reasonable outcomes for working with narcissistic patients.
