Admission Requirements

Admission to Candidacy
MPC membership is required for admission to candidacy.  Application forms are available from the Vice President for Education and Training.  MPC members seeking to become candidates should send their applications to the Vice President for Education and Training.  Applications will be reviewed on the basis of educational background, training and experience.  Official University transcripts and three letters of recommendations are requested, and interviews will be conducted.

MPC welcomes all who are interested and qualified to the training programs.  MPC does not discriminate on the basis of age, ethnicity, gender, race, religion or sexual orientation of applicants.  The essence of MPC’s evaluation for admission to candidacy includes a judgment of the applicant’s likely capacity to be self-reflective, and to work well with the complexity of the psyche with a sense of curiosity and vitality.

Advisor
Upon admission a candidate will be provided a list of potential advisors from the Training and Certification committee. The candidate is free to choose an advisor at any time during training, or may opt to find consultation on an ad hoc basis.

Ombudsperson
The ombudsperson operates as a liaison between the candidates and the Training and Certification Committee.  The ombudsperson position is designed to facilitate dialogue, is a confidential source for candidates to voice their concerns and to potentially act upon them, and is a venue to enable the Training and Certification  Committee to bring matters for discussion to the candidates.

Progression Coordinator
The Vice-President for Certification functions as Progression Coordinator. The progression coordinator monitors candidate progress through the candidacy program.  He/she is available for consultation on procedural matters as well as for facilitation of candidate movement through the program.

Course Work
The candidate will direct his/her course of study and will decide how many courses to take in a given year.  Courses are scheduled on a three-year cycle, and may be taught in Ann Arbor, East Lansing, or elsewhere.  Candidates should keep in mind that most courses will be taught only every third year.

Financial Considerations
Fees for analysis and supervision are arranged individually between candidate and analyst.  Course fees must be paid in full each semester.  In case of financial hardship, the candidate should contact the current Vice President for Education and Training to make special arrangements. These matters will be handled discreetly.

Evaluation of Candidates
The work of each candidate will be evaluated periodically by the Training and Certification Committee.  Any needed recommendation will then be made regarding his/her progress in the program.

Waiver Policy
Candidates usually take their entire course of training through MPC.  An applicant or candidate who has had prior psychoanalytic training or wishes to alter some aspect of the MPC Program may request to have one or more requirements waived.  See the Procedure Handbook for specifics of the waiver process.

Certification
Upon nearing the fulfillment of all requirements, the candidate must obtain and complete appropriate documentation forms from the Vice President for Certification. The candidate may not have any outstanding financial obligations to MPC at the time of graduation.  A certificate, stating that the candidate has completed a course of training in adult psychoanalysis and/or child psychoanalysis, will be awarded at the annual banquet, usually held in June.  Upon the awarding of the Certificate in Psychoanalysis, MPC fully supports the use of the designation, Adult Psychoanalyst or Child Psychoanalyst.
