Joseph Lichtenberg, MD is a psychoanalyst in Washington DC and is an internationally renowned psychoanalytic theorist, teacher and major contributor to self psychology.  He is an authority on developmental theory and research and developed, along with Lachman and Fosshage, Motivational Systems Theory, which integrates many psychoanalytic theories with other disciplines such as developmental theory, neuroscience, cognitive theory and systems theory.  Dr. Lichtenberg was the founder of the Institute of Contemporary Psychotherapy & Psychoanalysis and served as its first Director.  He is a prolific writer whose major publications include: The Talking Cure; Psychoanalysis and Infant Research; Psychoanalysis and Motivation and The Clinical Exchange.  His more recent publications are Craft and Spirit and Sensuality and Sexuality Across the Divide of Shame.  Dr. Lichtenberg also serves as Editor-in-Chief of Psychoanalytic Inquiry.

Reflections on the Oedipal Strivings of Four to Six Year Old Children

and Different Forms of Sensuality and Sexuality in the Love Life of Adults.

In the morning session, Dr. Lichtenberg will present his understanding of the distinction between sensuality and sexuality by discussing the origins of love in early development.  He will address this distinction by specifically applying it to the period of the four to six year old child.  He will then turn to adult experiences and take up the themes and different strategies of attachment love, romantic love, lustful love, lust without love, and transference love in adult life.

In the afternoon, MPC Candidate in Adult Psychoanalysis, Reena Liberman, M.S.
will present a clinical case to Dr. Lichtenberg for his response and discussion.
